Happy Fourth of July!

If you are a longtime resident, you know that a lot of places in this part of the state shut down for the July 4 holiday, often closing a week or more. The habit reportedly stems from the old textile mill-based economy and the practice of closing the mills for a week or two this time of year.

I think it might also have to do with the time-honored southern traditions of slow-cookin' barbecue, drinking beer on the patio, and heading to the beach in a desperate attempt to escape the dog days of summer. (Course, if that last one were really the case everybody would shut down for the entire month of August.)

At any rate, I've been told about a few holiday hours I'll pass along:
  • County Line Cafe in Luthersville is closed until July 6th
  • Nick's Pizzeria is closed Saturday (also closed at lunch July 3 but open Friday night)
  • Rogers BBQ Luthersville is open Saturday until 2:30 pm
Grantville's Hidden Treasures will be OPEN on Saturday. This year's holiday marks the anniversary of the very first "Monthly Market." Leann will be offering some GREAT DEALS to folks who stop by...and DJ is sure to have some yummy watermelon on hand. A lazy drive down Highway 29 including - "the old highway" that is now Main & LaGrange streets - is a great way to make an adventure of your holiday excursion to Moreland, Franklin or Newnan for July 4 activities!!

Send Destiny to the Apollo Theater

The video is a bit shaky (okay, that's an understatement) but it will give you some idea of who Destiny Reeves is and why she has the opportunity to perform at the Apollo Theater. Her performance is scheduled for late July. This is a great opportunity for Grantville to pull together with an old-fashioned send-off to a hometown girl heading for stardom! Donations can be paid payable to Destiny's mom, Donnica "Nellie" Heard, and dropped off at Nick's if you don't know Nellie.

Baseball, Bargains, Lunch and Laughter!

Never mind the sensational bargains and wide selection, the number one reason to visit Grantville's Hidden Treasures (20 LaGrange Street) is to hear LeAnn Stokes laugh. I tell you, that laugh will lift dreariest of spirits and soften the hardest of hearts. Lucky for all of us in Grantville, she laughs often!

This Saturday you have a whole bunch of other reasons to come down to the corner of Main Street/Colley Street and LaGrange/Post Streets in downtown Grantville. Sellers from Bethlehem Baptist Church will take part in the Grantville Monthly Market Community Yard Sale(8 am to 2 pm or later.)hosted by Hidden Treasures.

You can also check out the Premier Jewelry Show presented by local resident Amanda Foiles, enjoy Free 10-minute Tanning Sessions and sign up for super salon specials at New Image Salon. Be sure to check out the pre-opening of ReUse the Past Annex, offering vintage and antique household items and featuring custom furniture crafted from salvaged wood. While you're here, find out about locally based service providers and small businesses nearby.

Ten-year old Destiny Reeves will perform during Nick's Parking Lot Pizza Party at noon. Pick up a raffle ticket for prizes donated by Born Again Antiques, William & Mary's Antiques and Community Bank & Trust (all in nearby Hogansville) as well as the businesses co-sponsoring this month's Grantville Market.

Down the block at the beautiful new Grantville baseball park, Little League All-Stars will be playing America's game throughout the day!

(...and if you think you have to miss the fun because there's laundry and shopping to do, don't fret! Just drop by Dollar General and visit the Corner Coin Laundry - it's as close to being "beautiful" as a laundrymat can get..lots of shiny new machines ready to make your smelly laundry fresh and clean!)

Main Street Blues

Coweta County workers turned out to complete a long-awaited road paving project downtown this morning. Those guys have a crazy habit of placing barrels and directing traffic as they think necessary in order to ensure the safety of workers as well as efficient project completion. When they blocked through-way driving on Main Street, and consequently limited access to curbside parking at downtown businesses, it caused much confusion and consternation among Main Street denizens.

Fortunately for all of those in the throes of distress, Grantville City Manager Scott Starnes responded to their cries of alarm promptly. He personally moved some of the traffic barrels to ensure easy access to the properties affected, thereby allowing hundreds of inconvenienced patrons to avoid the torture of walking an extra thirty yards to take care of their business.

Keeping Grantville Beautiful

Thanks to the City of Grantville Public Works crew, Grantville is looking better than ever! In preparation for last weekend's "clean up rally," and this weekend's town picnic, city workers have been busy, busy picking up litter, cutting grass, painting curbs, and completing other fix-up projects.

City Manager Scott Starnes and Mayor Casey Houston are two of many residents who have participated in litter pick-ups as part of Grantville's participation in Keep America Beautiful's Great American Clean Up 2009.

The Great American Clean Up lasts all year long...here's hoping Grantville residents will support the efforts of city workers. Trash cans are located in parks and through out downtown and a quick call to city hall will confirm the next scheduled date for the large-debris curbside pickup.

Additional Community Clean-ups will be scheduled throughout summer and fall. If you would like to be contacted with details please contact kim@grantville.net or leave word for City Manager Scott Starnes.
