School Calendar Survey is Now Online

The Coweta County Board of Education is considering several different options for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years and invites public comment.

There are three calendar proposals. All three proposals are for a two-year cycle of calendars for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. All three of the calendar proposals below retain a one-week Thanksgiving holiday break, a two-week break for Christmas and New Year's, and a one-week Spring break during the first full week of April. All three proposals include 180 days of student instruction. Election Day on November 2, 2010 would be a teacher workday and student holiday in all three calendars.

Calendar Option #1 begins school in the third week of August, and ends the year in the first week of June. Because of the later start, the 1st semester ends in mid-January, with two weeks of instruction after the Christmas and New Year's holiday break. This calendar combines a late-February teacher workday with a two-day holiday break to create a long-weekend Winter break.

Calendar Option #2 is similar to the current 2008-09 calendar. It begins school at the end of the first week/beginning of the second week of August, and ends the year in the last week of May. The 1st semester ends in the third week of December, before the Christmas and New Year's holiday break. This calendar retains the current full-week Winter break in late February.

Calendar Option #3 is similar to Option #2 but begins school one day earlier in both years. It begins school at the end of the first week of August, and ends the year in the last week of May. Starting school one day earlier allows for a one-day holiday in mid-October, after the teacher work-day (Options #1 and #2 have a mid-October teacher workday, but no holiday). The 1st semester also ends in the third week of December, before the Christmas and New Year's holiday break. This calendar also retains the current full-week Winter break in late February.

The survey will let the school system know which calendar you prefer, and allows you to leave a comment or suggestion. The survey can be taken through 5:00 p.m. on December 4, 2008.
